1:30 pm - Top Five Films 2008
|
1. Slumdog Millionaire

A perfect portrayal of world mostly foreign to the west, but done in such a fashion it entertains those unfamiliar. In an age of twisting, chopped up storytelling this film makes it have a purpose, instead of just functioning as a gimmick.
2. Synecdoche, New York

Charlie Kaufmann pulls through with another fantastic piece of absurdist storytelling in this well scripted, acted and directed (by Kaufmann himself) film. Not everything is meant to be taken literally, so when Samantha Morton's character goes to buy a house that is on fire and stays on fire for 20 years, read around it not in it.
3. My Blueberry Nights

Wong Kar Wai brings his poetic and wonderfully visual love stories to America where they find a perfect home. Amidst cafes, bars and casinos a certain romanticism of the country is captured and presented in such a fashion you can't help but fall in love with the America Wong Kar Wai sees.
4. My Winnipeg

Guy Maddin's most accessible piece and certainly one of his best, My Winnipeg chronicles his home town and his experiences within it. A town he claims possesses more sleepwalkers than any other town in the world, a fact not easily checkable. Something that really must be seen to understand.
5. Three way tie: Let the Right One In, The Wrestler and Snow Angels

All three well crafted and wonderful gems, in their own unique way, of the 2008 year.
Honorable mentions: The Fall, Man on Wire, The Signal, Paranoid Park, The Dark Knight, Pineapple Express,
Movies not seen yet that may bump out any of the Top 5: Milk, The Counterfeiters, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Towelhead, Rachel Getting Married, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Movies to disappoint: The Curious Case of Bejamin Button, Gran Torino, Cassandra's Dream, Diary of the Dead, Miracle at St. Ana,

4:34 pm - No dice Jimmy... No fucking dice.

This just in:
"Universal Pictures has set David Benioff (Troy, Wolverine) to write an untitled drama about the life of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Studio has acquired rights to "Heavier Than Heaven," a Cobain biography written by Charles Cross. Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, will executive produce.
The producers and studio would not address whether they had locked down music rights, or the nature of the story they are trying to tell. For "Heavier Than Heaven," Cross had access to Cobain's unpublished diaries as well as Cobain's friends and family members.
Cobain formed Nirvana in 1987 with bassis Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, the latter of whom now fronts the Foo Fighters. Led by Cobain's growling delivery, inventive guitar work and lyrics that appealed to a disaffected young generation, Nirvana ushered in the Seattle grunge music movement in the early '90s with hits like "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Cobain's life was marked by depression and drug use, and he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1994, leaving behind his wife and a daughter."

I woke up this morning to two guys wandering around my apartment. I guess they were from the electric company as the power was turned off. One of them took a piss with the bathroom door standing open. He didn't flush. I still have no idea how they got in.
Back to Indiana.
